Remember Gauntlet?  That old top-down, hack-and-slash, Co-Op dungeon-crawler?  Well guess what, it’s getting a reboot that hearkens back to the original classic.This is a full modern reboot from Warner Bros. and  Arrowhead Game Studios and will be the start of a new initiative called WB Games Vault.  The goal is to directly release digital games across multiple networks from both Warner Bros. and Midway brands alongside new IPs.  If you recall, Midway went bankrupt, but a lot of their IPs were purchased by Warner Bros.  Gauntlet will be the first game released under this new initiative.
Gauntlet is a throwback to the original title.  The four classic classes will be available for play; Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie, and Elf.  Each will have unique abilities, strengths and weaknesses.  Currently, the game has only been announced for PC through Steam.
“With Gauntlet we combined the arcade style of the original game with an entirely new look and feature set that includes emergent, local and online four-player gameplay,” said David Haddad, Senior Vice President, Digital Games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in the press release. “Gauntlet will be the first title in the WB Games Vault portfolio, which will provide us with an opportunity to access emerging talent within the game development community and match unique skills and experience with our extensive library of properties.”

“To us at Arrowhead, Gauntlet is one of the most defining games from our childhoods, and it’s amazing to be able to work with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on a brand new version,” said Johan Pilestedt, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios. “Gauntlet is one of the original and best known video game properties and we are looking forward to creating a fresh, yet true to the original, take on a multiplayer masterpiece.”A new Gauntlet game is to be released as a PC exclusive, with Warner Bros. insisting it’s a ‘completely modernised action RPG version of the celebrated dungeon crawler’.
The 1985 coin-op was originally manufactured by Atari, but they sold the rights to Midway and when they went bust a few years ago Warner Bros. bought up most of their assets.
As a result Gauntlet is billed as the first game for the WB Games Vault: which will see a range of download-only games based on Warner Bros. properties, old Midway/Atari games, and original IP.

By ‘entirely new look’ he seems to mean ‘predominately brown’ but our greatest concern from looking at this video is that there just aren’t enough monsters. More than average for a dungeon crawler perhaps, but still not as much as the original 29-year-old coin-op.That’s been a common problem with all the many attempts to update Gauntlet over the years, and this time the poisoned chalice is being passed to German company Arrowhead Game Studios – who are perhaps best known for Magicka and the still unreleased Helldivers.
